Kochi Castle, Kochi

Castle
Take a tour of Kochi Castle, one of only twelve remaining Japanese castles. Built in the early 1600s, it had to be thoroughly restored in the 18th century after a fire, but stills retains a large entrance gate, built in 1610. Roam the historic grounds--known as Kochi Park--admire the well preserved castle walls, and wander through the manicured gardens. Climb to the top of the main tower, which functions as a small museum, for panoramic views of the city. A visit to Kochi Castle represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Kochi vacation planner to plot your vacation.

  • Well worth a visit but you need to be reasonably fit to manage the walk up the hill and negotiate the large numbers of steps in the buildings. Great views from the top of the keep. Lots of information...  more »

  • Personally, I think this castle - despite being small - is in my top 5 of Japanese castles easily. The remaining structures date supposedly back to the 16th century - whereas most castles in Japan have been rebuilt in the 60s.
  • Very nice visit. Not too long, beautiful photos opportunities. Perfectly restored.
  • The way to the castle is well designed and decorated. It is worth for taking a leisure walk. The exhibition inside the castle is impressive.
  • I love visiting castles of Japan and this is no exception, it's glorious, spectacular and an architectural masterpiece. I often see these castles and wonder of the nightmare the logistics would have been in a time of limited technology but they still managed to build them and build them to last, please don't just walk around and think this is nice. Think about the age of the timber and how long it has lasted and think about those people that spent so long with blood, sweat and tears to build this castle.
  • A good view over the city! A good place to enjoy cherry blossom!
