Where to stay in Kobe

Kobe does best with sleek mid-range and high-end hotels offering views of the skyline; book rooms facing south for views of the bay during the day and the city lights at night. Luxury hotels along the waterfront are pricey but offer impeccable comfort and service. You can find last-minute accommodations at the city's budget hotels from the information desk in the main train station or online. For a very Japanese experience, try out one of the city's capsule hotels, known for ingenious space efficiency.

  • Nice place to see art. The permanent collection is mostly oil paintings. inspiring. No cameras/photos allowed.
  • State museum located 10 min from Hanshin Iwaya station. Museum architecture designed by Tadao Ando. Very minimalistic structure is beautiful but rather hard to navigate. The museum brings major but often eccentric exhibitions.
  • Depends largely on the current exhibition- if it interests you, that's great. But the permanent works are alright~ space is not huge. But the journey there is quite scenic.
  • Permanent collection is really good. Museum itself is an awesome example of Ando architecture. Staff are a bit over the top strict about use of smartphones (just to take notes!)
  • Beautiful temporary collections by Susumu Shingu
