  • A delicious meal cooked in a homely environment with a knowledgeable, affable and enthusiastic chef (and his wife)! This was one of the best afternoons spent in Japan so far and we came away having learnt so much about Japanese cuisine and culture. A must do for anyone visiting Kyoto! I can’t praise Taro’s pure passion and warm welcome enough!
  • We signed up for Haru Cooking Class expecting to learn to cook some Japanese food and learn a little about the ingredients, which of course we did. What we didnt expect however was to gain a deep insight into Japanese culture, the way they think and are brought up to think. We left with a much greater understanding of how Japanese society functions and why things in Japan are the way they are. Taro very openly shares his honest thoughts and opinions on Japanese culture and contrasting it with what he'd personally experienced living in America for many years. The fact I've made it this far into the review without saying anything about the Kobe beef probably says it all to those who know me. Taro and Yoshiko, teach very simply how to cook core Japanese dishes that are delicious and easy to make. The centre piece genuine Kobe beef steak was the most delicious thing I've tasted. The class should really be named Haru Japanese Culture Masterclass. If this isn't already on your itinerary then pick anything and replace it with this, I guarantee it will be better than what you originally planned anyway.
  • Definitely a five-star experience! Unlike other cooking classes, this is more intimate and it's held in a Japanese home! Taro and his family were very welcoming and informative. We learnt a lot about Japanese cooking techniques and the way of life. We helped to prepare miso soup, three side dishes and Kobe beef. I actually planned my trip to Kyoto around this cooking class.
  • Taro was very welcoming and amazing, giving me insight of food in his own home in Kyoto and the culture in Japan. He is so nice and open to any questions. Thank you so much Taro! ^_^
  • Absolutely fantastic experience with delicious food. Taro gave a very thorough overview of the basis behind japanese cooking. Highly recommend.
