Shibamata Taishakuten, Katsushika

4.1
Admire extraordinary wooden carvings and a lovely landscape garden among pine trees and bonsais at Shibamata Taishakuten, a Buddhist shrine with impressive gates set in a busy Tokyo suburb. Founded in 1629, the temple is a popular spot for locals, providing a calm atmosphere and quality craftsmanship to admire. The Edo River flows just east of the temple grounds, while the nearby road serves as a traditional street market with shops, stands, and restaurants all the way to the temple gates. Lying about 10 km (6 mi) from Asakusa, the temple sits some seven minutes by foot from Shibamata station on the Keisei line. • Passing was bustling with people going by Taishakuten-Sando to 2 heavens gate, came to the front of the taishaku Hall. Both sides of side 2 Tianmen and taishaku Temple worshipping the statue, a famous. I'm guarding its direction, each statue is facing the four cardinal points. It was quite a powerful figure.

  • A beautiful temple, we were somewhat surprised when someone stop us to tell us we needed to pay (we didn't even know there was a temple), we paid our entrance fee thinking it was just to see the old wooden art but there is a really nice and quiet garden in the back, we stayed here longer than we expected just because it was so relaxing, and during the time we were here there wasn't really anyone else.
  • A beautiful temple with amazing wood carvings. The walk around the temple is like going back in time. There are also many shops in the street leading to the temple. We ate at the unagi shop just outside the entry gate. It was very good.
  • Was there the last night of a year, a very elegant ancient temple with all the good atmosphere...highly recommended!
  • Friendly neighborhood with historical Japanese street
  • The temple is beautiful if you like wood carvings should not miss.

Where to stay in Tokyo

Tokyo abounds with excellent places to stay, from luxury affairs to humble budget-friendly lodgings. Its glittering skyscrapers house numerous international four- and five-star hotels, both in the populous cultural hotspots of Shinjuku and in the business centers of Akasaka and Shinbashi. Meanwhile, hostels catering to the shoestring traveler lie scattered throughout the city. For a memorable, distinctly Japanese experience, seek out a ryokan, a traditional bed and breakfast with tatami floor mats and sliding screen doors.
