Katori Shrine, Katori

Inspirock Rating:
4.5/5 based on 120+ reviews on the web
Enjoy the elegant vermillion, golden, and black color scheme of Katori Shrine, the most prominent of several hundred Shinto Katori shrines in an imposing early 1700s building set in a large forest. Dedicated to a warrior god, the shrine enjoyed great popularity among the samurai. It also gives its name to one of the three major sword-fighting styles in Japan, and was revered by the Imperial Court as a guardian shrine of the nation. Many impressively old, large trees around the shrine remain preserved due to a taboo. Colorful seasonal processions take place at the shrine, while plenty of good restaurants around the temple offer "unagi," a freshwater eel specialty.
