Stone Church, Karuizawa-machi

4.2
#2 of 17 in Sightseeing in Karuizawa-machi
Monument Religious Site
Resembling an entrance to an underground cave complex, Stone Church features leaning stone-and-glass arches arranged like a cut-up boulder in a terrace-shaped slabs. Built in 1988 by Kendrik Kellog, a proponent of organic architecture, the church commemorates Uchimura Kanzo (1861-1930), a Christian evangelist. Inside the church, you'll see rows of long pews and a stone altar, with lower parts of the walls inside this well-lit church covered with leaves. A popular venue for wedding ceremonies, performed both in Japanese and English, the church closes for visitors during private services. Take a free shuttle bus or taxi from Karuizawa station, which takes about 15 minutes.
