Karatsu Castle, Karatsu

3.7
Enjoy a view of the ocean and the city panorama from the top of Karatsu Castle, a landmark of Karatsu constructed in 1602. A must-see if you are in the area, the castle grounds, using the ocean as a natural moat, feature a small park with 100-year-old wisteria trees. The museum inside the castle tells the story of samurai life and local history, displays a substantial collection of pottery and swords. Walk up to the observation deck which, at the end of 200 steps, offers sweeping views of the Bay of Karatsu. The castle lies 3 km (1.8 mi) from Karatsu Beach, making for a nice hike with memorable scenery. To visit Karatsu Castle and other attractions in Karatsu, use our Karatsu online journey planner .

  • The castle is located in a photogenic scenery. Fron the castle itself there is a nice view of the surrounding city and islands. The museum is interesting but mostly in Japanese. They have some cool an...  more »
  • Aiming at yobuko by rental car from Hakata, a side trip on the way. Weather permitting, the scenery is beautiful. Lame because there is an elevator, but okay. Clean, helpful staff. Wisteria flowers thought seems to be beautiful in and come back again in the spring.

  • From the parking lot to the entrance of the Castle, rise on foot or by lift. At the mouth of the sea, suddenly this steep mountain is interesting feel. Arrive while a short distance to the road steadily climb with the Castle Square. The view from there is nothing spectacular! Matsuura river flow, grace is poured into Karatsu Bay, behind the Rainbow-no-Matsubara. The peculiar geographical landscape for map mania have been seen in the evening!

  • Lovely castle with a view of the sea and its surrounding area. This was featured in Yuri!!! On Ice as Hasetsu Castle. This place makes for a good trip from Fukuoka. The train ride from Hakata Station to Karatsu Station takes about sixty-five minutes. Walking to the castle takes about twenty-thirty minutes, while a cab will take you there in about five. There is an elevator you can pay to get to the castle from the bottom of the hill, or you can climb the stairs.
  • Wonderful views from the tower and the palace grounds, except for the construction nearby. Museum inside the castle, mostly Japanese with little English, but enough to know what everything is. You can buy tickets at the machine. That has English.
  • Karatsu Castle has a beautiful view from the top and is worth the ¥500 admission fee. Inside the castle is a mini museum about the castle's history. But just a note, there's almost no English at this attraction. But I definitely recommend you come check it out.
  • It's very pretty from the outside and the view from the tower is stunning. The inside looks like a subway station. Honestly, it's dark green and tiled (see last picture). Nearby, there is a charming art gallery by the former residence.
  • Great views from recent refurbished work. Museum has no English
