Tokeiji Temple, Kamakura

4.0
Established in 1285, the Buddhist temple and nunnery of Tokeiji Temple notably acted as a refuge for women who were abused by their husbands. After the death of her husband, nun Kakusan-ni opened the temple in his memory, and it became a refuge for abused wives who sought divorce, which was not allowed in those days. Here you can reflect on the important social role this temple in particular performed (taking in over 2,000 women during the Edo period alone), and wander the peaceful, picturesque gardens, which offer year-round blooms of flowers. Put Tokeiji Temple into our Kamakura trip site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • This is one of the smaller temples with beautiful grounds to walk in. It is also far quieter, and hence, a good break from the other more crowded places here.  more »
