Tokeiji Temple, Kamakura

3.9
Established in 1285, the Buddhist temple and nunnery of Tokeiji Temple notably acted as a refuge for women who were abused by their husbands. After the death of her husband, nun Kakusan-ni opened the temple in his memory, and it became a refuge for abused wives who sought divorce, which was not allowed in those days. Here you can reflect on the important social role this temple in particular performed (taking in over 2,000 women during the Edo period alone), and wander the peaceful, picturesque gardens, which offer year-round blooms of flowers. Put Tokeiji Temple into our Kamakura trip site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Enjoy seasonal flowers like Kamakura rich natural small temple, but here's the most interesting is grave in the back. Rush Temple era ' Nun's grave, celebrity graves, strange shapes of tombstones and Genpei mounds. It is a grave is actually a very nice place and you realize, that the temple.

  • Is the Kita-Kamakura station to Temple-hopping and want to visit 5 locations, with this likely went day. Near the temple is the Engaku-ji Temple, and on the other side. Richmond Temple is famous, Meiji period lost by the repeal of the Act. According to the seasons, such as hydrangeas and iris flowers and landscapes, but both precinct and harbor all is modest.

  • Famous for its historical temples and Shrine, Kamakura is also popular as Plum flower spot. Best example is Tokeiji Temple. I really enjoyed the beautiful plum colors of red, pink and white with sweet smell. 😍💕
  • Good tourist attraction, if you are around Kamakura, and want to do the shrine run all around, ensure to cover this shrine, if interested in a hill trail, you can travel from this place to the Buddha Statue(Kotuko-in). It will take you around 45 minutes, but highly recommended. Remember to wear your good hiking or sports shoes! Enjoy.
  • Tokeiji is a solemn and quiet temple. For those who have an appreciation for wooden and gold enlaid statues and other cultural artifacts please visit here. Uneven stone steps leading up to the entrance is beautiful especially after it rained. Be careful though as stones and cypress wood can be slippery. After you pay the entrance fee, you’ll get a simple leaflet in English explain the bare basics of the temple. Point of interest here is the Saka Nyorai statues of very high value and standing in the world of Buddhism. This is another temple that is very easy to get to and is about 8 minutes walk from Kita-Kamakura Station. Entrance is 200 yen, so about $2.00. Most locals who visit this temple come for its many flowers and natural brush. Also, if you are spending a few weeks in Japan, Tokeiji is a good place to go to experience tea ceremony. There are also other cultural lessons you can take as well. Incense burning ceremony and the scribing of Sutras and flower arrangement, which is called sashibana here. Hisotorically, this temple was a refuge for battered houswives and they could be safe here because back in the old days a woman could not file for a divorce.
  • Interesting to see this small temple, and learning about it's history as a refuge for woman.
  • Great in warm weather- cool & lush, great for photos in afternoon soft light. Great peaceful atmosphere.
