Tokeiji Temple, Kamakura

4.0
#9 of 77 in Historic Sites in Kamakura
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Established in 1285, the Buddhist temple and nunnery of Tokeiji Temple notably acted as a refuge for women who were abused by their husbands. After the death of her husband, nun Kakusan-ni opened the temple in his memory, and it became a refuge for abused wives who sought divorce, which was not allowed in those days. Here you can reflect on the important social role this temple in particular performed (taking in over 2,000 women during the Edo period alone), and wander the peaceful, picturesque gardens, which offer year-round blooms of flowers. Plan your visit to Tokeiji Temple and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Kamakura vacation generator.

  • In a quiet, guests can enjoy seasonal flowers. Captive raccoons are cute. You'll get biking course at the entrance and going up a side street from the side. This one is highly recommended.

Where to stay in Kamakura

Given the easy access from Tokyo via a number of public transport options, the vast majority of visitors to Kamakura choose to stay in the capital and head here for a day trip. If you feel there's too much to see in one day, then you'll be pleased to find a decent selection of accommodations in Kamakura itself. Down by the sea sit perhaps the most luxurious of the crop, with sea views high on the list of desires for those who stay here. Follow the river as it snakes inland past the train station, and you'll see a good number of more standard hotels, as well as particularly budget-friendly guesthouses.
