  • I didn’t expect much here. Just visited as this place is for one of the 7 luck Gods. Surprised. Peaceful and calm hill trail in a forest leads you to the God. Very nice  more »

  • When you are ascending the long stone steps take notice of the green and surroundings. It feels like you are stepping out of the city. Admissions is 200 yen ( $2.00USD). The draw here is that this is a Zen temple, one of the five greats in Kamakura. Think space and minimalism when visiting a zen temple as opposed to just a temple. Another draw would be to see the statue of Hotei, one of Kamakura’s seven lucky gods. Drop money into his bucket and rub his belly for good luck. This is a temple to go to when you want to just sit and reflect on yourself. Don’t rush through the paths as it is easy to miss sublte architectural features in the landscape, like the bamboo, and the ferms. The winding trees with dainty little leaves hanging from them. I highly recommend getting a sense of the cemetaries, and be aware that this temple is divided into to two whole parts, so make sure you pick up a map. There is a visitor center where you can purchase memorabilia such as lucky placards, and trinkets and stamp rally called “ Goshuin.” I would recommend this place for couples or solo-travellers who love to take pictures.
  • This is yet another of the beautiful temples in this area. You can basically walk all day here and see temples :)
  • If you like Temples nestled amongst beautiful nature, this place is worth a visit.
  • Hana matsuri at the beautiful temple, with a great concert by the Osaka group Hunny Record. Bought the CD!
  • Very solemn place to relax

Where to stay in Kamakura

Given the easy access from Tokyo via a number of public transport options, the vast majority of visitors to Kamakura choose to stay in the capital and head here for a day trip. If you feel there's too much to see in one day, then you'll be pleased to find a decent selection of accommodations in Kamakura itself. Down by the sea sit perhaps the most luxurious of the crop, with sea views high on the list of desires for those who stay here. Follow the river as it snakes inland past the train station, and you'll see a good number of more standard hotels, as well as particularly budget-friendly guesthouses.
