See the artworks and icons, and learn about the history of Hokokuji Temple, an old and impressive temple. Founded in 1334, the Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple had a straw roof until it was damaged by an earthquake in 1923, but still displays a similar roof on its bell tower today. Also known as "Bamboo Temple," the religious site has an attractive bamboo grove just behind the main hall. With over 2,000 tall bamboo plants, and a small tea house, the garden offers a place of respite popular with tourists and worshippers alike. Our Kamakura vacation route planner makes visiting Hokokuji Temple and other Kamakura attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • I went to bring foreign friends and Matcha. It was only to be told the bamboo Temple and the temple is very beautiful bamboo Temple. Was turning the video was then leaving the gate of the temple. Who's responsible to do so with! And was scolded like Recca, taken from the monk was in! Lack of manners as a tourist location regardless of the occasion, the gate no matter how much we still had to shoot so the thing and events to reflect on. However, this does not mean just taking something to break, was hurt. Cursed with still some words. In a very good mood had Kamakura sightseeing, in other words has gotten depressed completely in the mood. Landscape is very beautiful temple, monk is very scary.

  • Guests can enjoy tea, and bamboo groves and tea house in the back of the temple. Green tea included with admission price is 700 yen. Take a 30-minute walk from Kamakura station, so the bus is recommended.

  • Just called and known as the bamboo Temple and exquisitely arranged bamboo is great. You can enjoy green tea while watching the front of bamboo. Please note that the green tea tickets are paid along with the admission form.

  • Super nice with the bamboo garden! Enjoyed it more than the main temple in Kamakura. Take a bus down if the sun is scorching.
  • Beautiful small temple with a small zen garden and a bamboo forest. One can enjoy tea with a relaxing bamboo view here. Not crowded. It closes at 4pm.
  • A very small yet beautiful bamboo forest in this temple. Must see in kamakura. It's closes early at 4 pm. Take 5 number bus from kamakura station.
  • One of the most amazing places I've ever been. The tall bamboo trees will fill you with peace and joy. It's a mystical experience which you can round up with a cup of matcha tea. An absolute must if you go to Kamakura...
  • One of the best places to visit in Kamakura in my opinion. Less overrun than the great buddha statue. The temple and bamboo forest are not big but pretty. The tea ceremony although short and mass-produced version of a real Japanese tea ceremony is nice. I had a good time walking around and relaxing, before heading back to the main station. If you don't like small crowded buses or don't wanna walk to the temple take a taxi at kamakura station, same side where the bus terminal/stop is.
