Buried Shrine Gate, Kagoshima

(3.9/5 based on 130+ reviews on the web)
Imagine the sheer force of nature at Buried Shrine Gate, an entrance to a Shinto temple buried 2 m (6 ft) under volcanic ash for over a century. The powerful eruption of Mount Sakura in 1914 catapulted ash and pumice 7 km (4.5 mi) into the air, creating a 2 m (6.6 ft) high ash deposit in a single night, and leaving only 1 m (3.3 ft) of the gate still visible above the ground. The lava also covered an entire village of 687 houses, whose roofs stayed visible above the ground. • There were wearing black shrine, Torii was buried by the eruption of the 0/1914. And before being buried was 3 meters in height and... have been buried under the ashes is the main shrine. Surprised this place while watching Sakurajima still rising plume that was very impressed.

  • It is a shrine have been buried by the eruption of the Torii. To tell the greatness of the eruption, but I thought he could dig up or leave. In Berlin, such as tourist buses may be as the name Torii was buried, no other tourist attractions around, so come to your destination here is a little harsh, but I think is a good place.
