Buried Shrine Gate, Kagoshima
(3.8/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
Imagine the sheer force of nature at Buried Shrine Gate, an entrance to a Shinto temple buried 2 m (6 ft) under volcanic ash for over a century. The powerful eruption of Mount Sakura in 1914 catapulted ash and pumice 7 km (4.5 mi) into the air, creating a 2 m (6.6 ft) high ash deposit in a single night, and leaving only 1 m (3.3 ft) of the gate still visible above the ground. The lava also covered an entire village of 687 houses, whose roofs stayed visible above the ground. Use our Kagoshima vacation route planner to add Buried Shrine Gate and other attractions to your Kagoshima vacation plans.

  • Torii are buried in volcanic ash during the eruption of Sakura-jima. I thought me so much volcanic ash rains. Made me think what will happen after eruption of Mt. Fuji.
