Izumo-taisha, Izumo

4.5
#1 of 315 in Things to do in Shimane Prefecture
Religious Site Tourist Spot
Likely the oldest site of its kind in the country, Izumo-taisha also represents as one of the most important places of worship in the Shinto religion. You'll walk on extremely ancient ground when visiting the shrine, as the site dates back to at least the 8th century. Despite the temple's long history, the appearance of the main shrine only dates back to the 18th century. The main hall, renovated every few decades, last underwent a major rebuilding in 2013. Pay special attention to the straw ropes hanging over the entrance into the main section of the complex--visitors able to throw and lodge a coin in them can allegedly hope for continued good fortune. It couldn't be easier to arrange your visit to Izumo-taisha and many more Izumo attractions: make an itinerary online using Inspirock's Izumo vacation trip planner.

Where to stay in Izumo

Hotels in Izumo cluster around the railway station, mostly on the northern side. Get a map at the station for the location and prices of a few inexpensive ryokans and family-operated bed and breakfasts scattered around the city. A number of mid-range business establishments lie in the western part of town and south of the railway station. Capacity in the city is limited, so consider exploring the wider selection of accommodations on the eastern shore of Lake Shinji, some 30 km (18 mi) away from Izumo.

  • One of Japan's oldest and largest shrines. A vast and beautiful complex to explore. I was impressed by the variety of buildings, from the enormous grand shrine to ones seemingly hidden in the surrounding forest. Worth a day trip for sure!
  • Izumo Taisha is a grand shrine that is a must see spot if you come to Shimane. There is plenty of parking next to the shrine but I recommend parking a few blocks away and walking through town to see all the shops on your way to the shrine.
  • This is part of this vast temple complex and a beautiful building.
  • famous Japanese spiritual place. so mysterious. highly recommended.
