Izumo Grand Shrine, Izumo

Must see · Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Likely the oldest site of its kind in the country, Izumo Grand Shrine also represents as one of the most important places of worship in the Shinto religion. You'll walk on extremely ancient ground when visiting the shrine, as the site dates back to at least the 8th century. Despite the temple's long history, the appearance of the main shrine only dates back to the 18th century. The main hall, renovated every few decades, last underwent a major rebuilding in 2013. Pay special attention to the straw ropes hanging over the entrance into the main section of the complex--visitors able to throw and lodge a coin in them can allegedly hope for continued good fortune.
