Hinomisaki Shrine, Izumo

4.2
Whichever part of the crimson structure of Hinomisaki Shrine you look at, you'll find ornate carvings of various birds, dragons, and other traditionally symbolic creatures. Designated a nationally important cultural property, the shrine is estimated to have been established sometime between the sixth and eighth centuries, with its current structures having been rebuilt in the 17th century. Look out for the sacred land mass 100 m (328 ft) off shore, which serves as a breeding site for black-tailed gulls and has been designated a natural monument. You can also see the tallest masonry lighthouse in the country, standing around 0.5 km (0.3 mi) from the site. • Red color made this shrine looks beautiful. Near sunset time, you can see this shrine looks beautiful with glitter from the sun. There are ornaments of elephants and giraffe in this shrine. This made shrine looks different from others.
  • Lovely and beautiful shrine in red.
  • Beautiful vermilion-trimmed shrine complex dedication to Amaterasu and Susanoo that is actually relatively easily missed if you're just aware of the nearby lighthouse.
  • This is a stunning shrine and definitely worth a visit, maybe combined with a walk to the lighthouse nearby :)
  • On the way to hinomisaki shrine. Red shrine looks from the road. Very good atmosphere and fewer tourists. Parking is free of charge. Nokyo-sho.

Where to stay in Izumo

Hotels in Izumo cluster around the railway station, mostly on the northern side. Get a map at the station for the location and prices of a few inexpensive ryokans and family-operated bed and breakfasts scattered around the city. A number of mid-range business establishments lie in the western part of town and south of the railway station. Capacity in the city is limited, so consider exploring the wider selection of accommodations on the eastern shore of Lake Shinji, some 30 km (18 mi) away from Izumo.
