The Tower of Himeyuri, Itoman

4.4
#2 of 25 in Things to do in Itoman
Historic Site Tourist Spot
Visit The Tower of Himeyuri, a memorial to the lives of school students and teachers lost during the Battle of Okinawa during World War II. Part of a wider peace park and museum complex, the simple monolith was inaugurated in 1946, dedicated to the 230 young people and teachers who died tending wounded soldiers at the field hospital in the cave behind the memorial. The pleasant gardens contrast with the austerity of the structure itself, and the whole site possesses a hushed atmosphere. • Most impressing memorial for the victims of this horrible and futile battle which cost so many lives. Everyone should come here!
  • Okinawa is a very beautiful island but WW2 is one area that can be a sad point in its history. Nevertheless, we should not look away at history. If you do have a chance to visit this island, I think this place is one area you should visit.
  • A true peace memorial, the stories and accounts of the experiences of the students during WWII are clearly expressed.
  • A sad but real story, everyone must go there once they visit Okinawa.
  • Historical place to go
