Oharai-machi, Ise

(4.4/5 based on 360+ reviews on the web)
Take a look at what's on offer down Oharai-machi, a historic commercial street in the center of town. With plenty of traditional buildings housing shops and restaurants, the street captures the character of days gone by, with many businesses having opened their doors to travelers and pilgrims for centuries. Try "ise udon," a dish of thick udon noodles in a rich sauce, and "akafuku," traditional Japanese sweets made using mochi rice and red bean paste. Halfway down the street sits a historical recreation area, completed in 1993 to have the look and feel of the Edo and early Meiji periods. Use our Ise family vacation planner to add Oharai-machi and other attractions to your Ise vacation plans.
