Futamiokitama Shrine, Ise

3.9
#6 of 19 in Historic Sites in Ise
Jutting from the sea, two large rocks wedded by thick straw ropes represent Futamiokitama Shrine--a husband and wife rock. Couples frequently come here to pray for a life full of happiness and love. The larger one, 9 m (30 ft) tall, represents the male, while the female boulder stands 4 m (13 ft). Allegedly the ropes date back to the 14th century. Enjoy the landscape of ocean and waves crashing over the rocks, and examine the shoreline's sculptures of hundreds of frogs, dedicated to the Shinto goddess of food. It is thought the smaller rocks and larger than expected. Good place to spend many minutes might not be that, and hope.

Very relaxing. I spent a few hours sitting on the beachfront and putting my toes in the water. It's a very small shrine and the meoto iwa rocks are very small so not worth it for a trip if it's out of your way. It's a nice place to relax on the ocean if you're in the area however.

A beautiful place to observe the sunrise and sunset, and also a famous spiritual place to pray for lasting relationships with your loved ones. Especially popular for couples. The rocks tied together with sacred ropes are supposed to symbolize the union of marriage between a married couple.

Went here on our honeymoon and it was a perfect spot for us. Not sure it's worth the trek out if you're not coupled up.

It's a small shrine and it only takes 20mins to browse.
