Lake Ikeda, Ibusuki

1.4
#2 of 8 in Parks in Ibusuki
Water Body Nature / Park
Visit Lake Ikeda and see if you can spot the aquatic monster "Issie," reported to dwell in the depths of this caldera. The largest on the island, the lake has a surface area of 11 sq km (4.2 sq mi), and plays home to some sizeable eels. Swim in the temperate waters, enjoy the mountain scenery, and snap pictures of the smiling statue of the lake's mythical resident. A few restaurants offer extensive menus and tanks with examples of the large eels on display. During the months of February to March, the areas surrounding the lake burst with yellow rape flowers in full bloom, creating a very picturesque view. Take a look at our Ibusuki tour planner to schedule your visit to Lake Ikeda and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

Where to stay in Ibusuki

The main resort town of the southern extreme of the peninsula, Ibusuki has a number of accommodations to cater to its guests. Because of the town's focus on its geothermal spas, the primary accommodations here include such facilities on site, including sand baths and traditional Japanese bathhouses, known as "onsen." You'll find the greatest number of choices to the east of the train station along the coast. Some more budget-friendly options exist, particularly the campsites further up the coast to the north.

  • I wish I'd listened to all the other negative comments about this place, and not wasted my time going. In February, the flowers aren't there, so it's not pretty. Therefore they don't expect tourists, ...  more »
  • The area is very nice and the flowers are very beautiful. Shame that there isn't a footpath that allows us to walk around the lake. The restaurant next to the lake serves very good food!  more »
  • The view is not stunning at all, except the blossoming yellow flowers. If you don't have much time, you can simply skip it.  more »
