  • On the north east peninsular of Hokkaido, it a bit difficult to reach. But the effort is really worth it, A huge National Park, it has a mountain range on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the...  more »

  • This was the main point of my visit - I joined a local tour, and the tour guide was very knowledgeable, taking us through the woods and explaining the route / trees / animals that lived in the park...  more »

  • 素晴らしかったね。 Loved this wild, protected park on a peninsula. 'Five Lakes' is beautiful to walk around and there is plenty of wildlife to see, but my favorite experience was relaxing in a warm river called Kamuiwakka カムイワッカ. Great memories !
  • One of the most remote regions in Japan, much of the peninsula is only accessible on foot or by boat. Shiretoko is best known as the home of Japan's largest brown bear population and for offering views of Kunashiri Island, ownership of which Japan and Russia dispute. The park has a hot springs waterfallcalled Kamuiwakka Falls (カムイワッカの滝Kamuiwakka-no-taki). Kamui wakka means "water of the gods" in Ainu. The forests of the park are temperate and subalpinemixed forests; the main tree species include Sakhalin fir (Abies sachalinensis), Erman's birch (Betula ermanii) and Mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica). Beyond the forest limit there are impenetrable Siberian dwarf pine (Pinus pumila) thickets. In 2005, UNESCO designated the area a World Heritage Site, advising to develop the property jointly with the Kuril Islands of Russia as a transboundary "World Heritage Peace Park".
  • The Park, at the northeastern tip of Hokkaido, is pretty easy to find on the map and on the ground. My wife and I drove here in May, 2015, and there were few visitors on a sunny day. The Park was refreshing in every way and the experience was still vivid in my mind!
  • A beautiful natural preserve. Truly an untouchable forest.
  • Went here during my trip to drive around Hokkaido on my motorcycle. The scene of nature around is extremely beautiful. You can see the wildlife like dears, raccoons, and even bears (if your lucky or unlucky depending on how you consider that). There are nice hot springs around this area with a view of the ocean so suggest coming here if you have some free time.
