Honkawa Elementary School Peace Museum, Hiroshima

The Honkawa Elementary School Peace Museum is a museum of the Peace in Honkawacho, Naka-ku, Hiroshima, Japan.The school was the closest school to ground zero.They lost about 400 students and more than 10 teachers, and the building took great amounts of damage from the atomic bomb dropped on August 6, 1945.The Peace Museum is the part of the school building with the basement of the former Hiroshima City Honkawa Elementary School; it is kept as a place to learn about the importance of peace.The museum is operated by the PTA, as well as former members of the PTA, and is cleaned and maintained by the students.The memorial service for the students and teachers killed in the blast is held every August 5 at the school. The school has also appeared in the manga Barefoot Gen, written by Keiji Nakazawa.

  • In the premises of the honkawa elementary school located near the flows on the West side of the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima City honkawa. Anyone can visit remains of bombed buildings, in the elementary Office if you get permission.

  • Route was was struck around basement walls of burnt ruins. Pictures of buildings in the photos had centered on the atomic bomb Dome near the hypocenter, and destroyed many buildings to some. Honkawa elementary school is one of them. Still have the building to heat and in the basement until the harsh and rigour will be disastrous.

  • Certainly visited starting in 2009. To renew vows to wage war with both the bye to the various foreign et al of us teach new to defend itself from the threat of military force should be.   • Two survivors had close to ground zero (now island of surgery, internal medicine). Female teachers and is 5th grade female students at the time. Also enter the socks off the field in the cafe, but women's children are rescued, could not in will. Two other than the principal, staff and also pray for the souls of elementary school children.
