Ground Zero, Hiroshima

(3.4/5 based on 260+ reviews on the web)
The first ever atomic bomb exploded some 600 m (1,968 ft) above Ground Zero, sending radioactive heat waves of 3-4,000 C (5,432-7,232 F) down below. Feel the ultimate spot of destruction, the epicenter of havoc wrought by the atmoic bomb on a city hitherto undamaged by war. Now displaying a marble slab with a US military photo of the destruction, the site serves as a chilling and sobering reminder of the effects of war. Leaning against the huge modern structure of Shima Hospital, some 180 m (590 ft) from the Atomic Bomb Dome, the spot makes a worthwhile stop during a tour of the area's memorials. Make Ground Zero a centerpiece of your Hiroshima vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Hiroshima family vacation planner.

  • Above is just a few steps away from the atomic bomb Dome Island Hospital is ground zero. Atomic bomb dropped on the goal of the T-shaped aioi bridge is swept to the westerly and then exploded in the sky here, had appeared the vast devastation. This guide version felt very heavy. Still facing main street (honndoori), from the East side of the motoyasu bridge, turn left at the first intersection, and North Island Hospital on the right side, there are information boards. Around an area lined with parking and vehicle traffic, 10 minutes please note.

  • The hypocenter is different from the Atomic Bomb Dome Building . This is where Japanese scientists concluded the bomb went off above. It is a short distance from the Atomic Dome. A 4 foot marker signifies the spot with a short summary in English as well in Japanese. Must see for History buffs.
  • A must do.
