Shoshazan Engyoji, Himeji
(4.8/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Journey to the massive, picturesque temple complex of Shoshazan Engyoji, with ancient structures peppered throughout a densely forested mountain top. Established over 1,000 years ago, the complex remains lovingly preserved, and still serves worshippers and monks in training to this day. Across its sprawling site you'll observe huge temple halls with immaculately designed wooden architecture, filled with Buddhist artifacts and treasures. The site served as a shooting location in the Hollywood movie, "The Last Samurai," and it's easy to see why. Wear sturdy shoes to negotiate the uneven ground, and bring enough water for your trip. Plan your visit to Shoshazan Engyoji and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Himeji tour planner.

  • I went after Himeji Castle. I bought because it sells aerial tramway with a round-trip bus ticket to quell Himeji station Himeji Bldg. 1F. Flowing hanging information in my selfish assumption based on, was making a big mistake if you get in the aerial tramway just Temple?. Shuttle service (charges apply) at the walking trail takes about 15 minutes and from there walk to the temple. To see clouds between the mountains in the Middle I went on foot, but wasn't easy, but which made it fun. Little became a foot rest, usually my lack of exercise is good exercise. Building is dotted with temples, walk again. I had written a stamp book manisan, in views and building have their own good taste is. So I just went to Himeji Castle after arriving and may fall away after dark, immediately, I have become a little sad feeling.

  • We didn't see a lot of non-Japanese tourists, but this place is really beautiful. Don't be scared to get there, you just need to take a bus #8 from Himeji Station (bus stop #10). Station names are not...  more »
  • A little distance from Himeji station, although ropeway discount tickets with bus staff. Also called Mt. Hiei in the West are striking. It was a splendid Temple. It is a temple should go in Himeji Castle and tying once.
