Escape to a sanctuary of natural beauty at Koko-en, a collection of Japanese gardens scattered across the grounds of Himeji Castle. Constructed in 1992, these nine gardens reflect different styles of the Edo Period and welcome visitors looking for a peaceful space to unwind. Spread across 3.5 hectares (8.6 acres), the park contains elegant bridges, flower and bamboo gardens, pristine waterfalls, and a ceremonial teahouse where you can enjoy a cup of traditionally brewed matcha or green tea. The gardens are accessed via a short walk from the castle's main entrance. Make Koko-en a part of your Himeji vacation plans using our Himeji day trip planner.

Make sure to get the combination ticket for both Koko-en and the castle, it is well worth the extra 50 yen and both attractions are highly worth visiting. I came to the gardens after the castle and... more »

Came here with a Himeji Castle combined ticket, on a different day as ours was valid until the next day. Worth a visit if you're visiting the castle, otherwise forget it. Having been to Okayama... more »

You can buy a combined ticket along with Himeji Castle's. It's worth. The garden is very close to the castle and the work on the creeks and vegetation is impressive. In addition to walk around, there.... more »

Visited during spring time, the wind was so very cooling and relaxing. Add that to the beauty of the garden. It was so relaxing that I wanted to take a nap right in the garden! The stair climbing in Himeji Jo nearby helped to build the mood for nap taking too.

Beautiful Japanese garden with tea house inside. It's just a few minutes from Himeji Castle and also you can buy combined ticket for both places. There are several parts with water, bamboo trees etc. If you ever imagined Japanese garden this one is definitely meets your imagination. In the middle there is a tea house so for 500 yens you can get traditional tea with sweet.

Really nice garden. Not as busy as the castle. Would highly recommend.

This is a garden next to Himeji Castle. If you want to visit both places, you can buy a combined ticket that will reduce 260 yen. The place is very completely natural beauty. You can have tea inside the garden and enjoy the natural view. I'll recommend everyone to visit the garden together with Himeji Castle. This is undoubtedly a natural soothing place.

This is a nice garden with a set path. It's on the small side, so it's a quick stop. There is an indoor seating area where you can sit to admire the water.
