Mt. Asahidake, Higashikawa-cho

(4.8/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
The highest peak in Hokkaido, Mt. Asahidake rises formidably to 2,291 m (7,516 ft) above sea level. Winter on this volcanic mountain brings skiers and snowboarders, relishing the powder of its unspoiled slopes, while in summertime, hikers make the hearty ascent to the summit, complete with steaming vents and a crater. The trek from the foot of the mountain is a grueling 4.5-hour slog, worthy for experienced hikers; if you want something a little less intensive, take the healthy hike after riding the gondola up to Sugatami. From here you can either follow a 60-minute circular trail, observing ponds and sulphurous vents, or walk for roughly two hours on a well-marked path up and along the crater's edge. Have your camera ready at the summit for some dramatic views and steaming bellows. You'll need hiking boots, plenty of water and snacks, and altitude-appropriate dress. For Mt. Asahidake and beyond, use our Higashikawa-cho trip generator to get the most from your Higashikawa-cho vacation.

  • In early April, there is much snow yet. People, so it is not suitable for skiing, walking, mountain climbing, but the views above pretty much up and don't waste a trip-certainly.

  • I've been skating BC the Asahi-Dake ropeway. It was blessed with sunny winter season though low temperatures, excellent snow quality. Return traverse was a great experience. When temperature is minus 15-Nice was about 20 ° shade quite cold and frostbite so well thought content.
