City of Music

An important industrial hub with a sizable immigrant population from South America, Hamamatsu has developed a taste for international cuisine and arts. Climb the only skyscraper in the city for a sweeping panorama of the largest city in Shizuoka, or explore castle ruins from the 16th century and a restored 17th-century traffic checkpoint. Among things to do in Hamamatsu are visits to art and science museums, art galleries, city parks, and various festivals year-round. The city provides a wide array of activities with a great deal of ethnic stores, restaurants, bars, and clubs. Easily explored on foot, the city also has an excellent public transportation network. Go for a picnic on the vast sand dunes, spend a day a rafting on the Tenryu River, and visit Buddhist monasteries in the serene mountain setting. Use our Japan vacation planner to arrange the hows, wheres, and whens of your trip to Hamamatsu.

Where to stay

Hamamatsu offers a wide selection of mid-range and low budget lodgings, lining both sides of the rail lines and spreading towards the north in Asahicho and Kajimachi. A few four-star options downtown and a number of ryokans offer onsens, while boutique hotels and hostels cluster in the north. An industrial city with a sizeable student population, Hamamatsu has plenty of inexpensive accommodations. Staying in the popular Sunayama Cho area south of the railway station puts you in close proximity to the river and seaside.
