  • What a fantastic Museum . If you love Art, Love Nature then this place is made for you. It is set in a open park setting with terrific sculptures all over it. My son said we got to go and even he did not realize how many displays were there. There is even a Picasso Museum. I only had a little over an hour as they close 5pm. I wish I had more time to enjoy the views
  • Huge and beautiful. Great place to spend half a day. It is well planned and exhibits are well laid out. And it is simply beautiful, even if you are not an art fan. Some of the sculptures are amazing, some are really fun and the Picasso exhibition is wonderful. They didn't forget the children, so there are several interactive displays (the colorful nets are great) and there is a nice indoor playground. Definitely worth a visit.
  • I loved this place so much when I came several years ago that I came back this time when I visited Japan. Hakone in general is well worth a visit, but this museum makes it worth a visit just on its own. The grounds re beautiful, the views are unbelievable, and the art seems a part of the landscape. Some of the sculptures are fun and whimsical, some are creepy or unsettling, some are simply beautiful to look at. Easily my favorite is the stained glass tower, which photos can't do justice. The hot-spring fed foot bath is a very nice touch, especially if you've been on your feet all day. There's also an entire building of Picassos. The sculpture lab inside is also fun to fool around in for a bit.
  • A great place to visit that isn't a major city. As a person interested in art I could easily spend the whole day there, but it's set up well for anyone. It rained the whole day, but we still enjoyed going. It's easy to find and walkable from the nearest station or bus stop. The surrounding area has plenty of onsen and beauty, too, so it's definitely a good place to stop - especially if you have a rail pass.
  • Wonderful museum for a reasonable entrance fee! Because most of the artwork is outside, make sure to check the weather before visiting. There is also a foot bath to relax in before leaving

Where to stay in Hakone-machi

A getaway close to the capital, Hakone-machi offers a good range of accommodations, with a particular emphasis on luxury and upmarket hotels. Spa resort-style hotels, often with extensive views of the iconic volcano, sit in the main tourist areas, with their spa facilities using naturally warmed waters from the hot springs around the area. The more densely populated areas to the east house a good number of simple guesthouses and hostels. Staying in Tokyo and taking day trips remains an option for many visitors.
