Owaku-dani Valley, Hakone-machi

4.0
Landmark · Tourist Spot
Formed by an ancient eruption, Owaku-dani Valley features active steam vents and hot water pools. From the local ropeway stop, you can navigate your way down to the active volcanic area and marvel at stream rising from many subterranean openings. Don't miss an opportunity to try a fresh onsen tama--these soft-boiled eggs, cooked by the sulphur waters, feature distinctive blackened shells. Inquire about the area's ropeway service status before you visit, as increased volcanic activity can lead to temporary closures. • We took a scenic drive to Owakudani in October. Unfortunately the hiking paths were closed but we still spent time roaming around the different shops & viewing different areas of the geothermal...  more »
  • A must visit. The place reeks of sulphur and is a truly lunar landscape! The black boiled eggs are delightful especially with the salt seasoning!  more »
  • Pretty spectacular view via Hakone ropeway as it slowly ascends to the top of the mountain. You can pretty much see a good 180 angle of the active sulfurous vents on the mountain if you were in the....  more »

  • The sulfur spilling down the hillside with vents all around was a blast to see (and ride over on the gondola). There's a bunch of neat foods to try like black meat buns, black ice cream which melts VERY fast, egg ice cream which is a delicious custard flavor, and black eggs. The view of mount Fuji is beautiful if you can catch it between clouds! Beware, the cloud ceiling lowers rapidly around 3pm - you'll have no views the rest of the day
  • Interesting place to visit to eat the black eggs and ride the rope way. Beautiful view of Fujisan and walk around to see the volcanic valley & the active sulphuric vents & hot springs, a birds eye view. Unfortunately the trails were closed. The eggs themselves are steamed in the geothermal heat and volcanic gas turning the outer shell black, are still warm when you purchase them and delicious.
  • Awesome place! Only reason for the 4 was because the trail was not open, so I was very sad. Check before you go up to see if the trails are open. Even if they are not, it's still a good trip. Black eggs and egg ice cream were really good. Rock museum...that's interesting and only $1 to get in.
  • An extremely beautiful view and a really fun time! But the price is definitely something that almost scared me away, like I get it go over the mountain wow and go across it like it's awesome yeah! But that price was definitely a lot to get stuck in lines the whole time to
  • This is a very interesting place where you can see that the Hakone mountain is active. It was very windy and I didn't smell sulfur when I went there. It's also a great place to go when Tokyo is too hot to handle in summer.
