Where to stay in Hakone-machi

A getaway close to the capital, Hakone-machi offers a good range of accommodations, with a particular emphasis on luxury and upmarket hotels. Spa resort-style hotels, often with extensive views of the iconic volcano, sit in the main tourist areas, with their spa facilities using naturally warmed waters from the hot springs around the area. The more densely populated areas to the east house a good number of simple guesthouses and hostels. Staying in Tokyo and taking day trips remains an option for many visitors.

  • Came across this place accidentally, and were fortunate to be there during a Sakura bloom. Beautiful park with an excellent hypothetical view of Mt. Fuji. Naturally at the time we were there Fuji-san did not show. We did enjoy the green tea and sweet though. Great experience.
  • We saw on the Hakone guide we received with our Hakone Day Pass that this park was recommended for it's view of Mount Fuji. Having really regretted not being able to see it the first time we came to Hakone, we decided to hope the sky stayed clear. Boy, were we rewarded. I was incredibly surprised by the absence of anyone (except for one guy who left after about 5 minutes) at a spot with such an excellent sunset view of Mt. Fuji over a scenic lake. Everything is crowded in Japan, so it was wonderful to have a moment to ourselves in a truly beautiful location. It's important to note, however, that we visited on a weekday evening in late March, so it was still quite cold and there was snow on the ground on the bus ride through the mountains. I would be willing to bet this area gets much more crowded during warmer months and on weekends.
  • Really nice little park!! Was hoping to get a glimpse of my Fuji from the lookout point here, but unfortunately didn't. Great view of lake ashi , though
  • Beautiful park overlooking Ashi Lake. On a lucky day, one can spot Mt. Fuji from the observation platform in the park.
  • What a lovely town! It was my dream to see it and wasn't disappointed. The cruise, cable cart and walk around Hakone was pure pleasure.
