Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu, Hakone-machi

#1 of 12 in Historic Sites in Hakone-machi
Historic Site Religious Site
Tucked away on the forested shores of Lake Ashi, Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu stands as one of the nation's major Shinto sites. Founded originally in the 8th century, the complex includes buildings that date back to the 1660s. The grounds feature an array of wooden structures with swooping rooftops and a distinctive black-and-red color scheme, all surrounded by dense cedar woods. Note that many dragons and dragon-like creatures from Japanese mythology adorn the interiors of the shrine's buildings, intended to protect the site from evil spirits. Don't miss the entryway of the main shrine--this red gate, just offshore in the waters of the lake, represents one of the most iconic scenes anywhere in the country. • The red tori gate is a short walk from the third ferry boat stop we took on Lake Ashi. You can clearly see it as your boat comes in to dock. A short 10 minute walk should be enough to get you there. Y...  more »
  • Such a fabulous shrine, it is a bit smaller than some other shrines but it is beautiful. I particularly liked the arch that overlooks Lake Ashi. Quite a few steps to the top, but lots to see on the wa...  more »
  • Nice shrine - especially with the gate at the lake. Try to sneak in between two chinese group tours.  more »

  • Very peaceful and scenic temple. Must visit if staying in hakone. Remember, toss coin, clap twice and pray.
  • A beautiful shrine surrounded by huge trees making it very peaceful and serene. The dragon fountain is amazing. It is a good place to visit after the ship ride across lake Ashi. You can make amazing photos if the weather is nice.
  • A must go shrine if you're visiting Hakone, quiet and magical place. Especially the famous torii gate where everybody need to take pictures with!
  • A nice little shrine to come visit after doing the trip around Hakone. The shrine itself is nothing too special (from a touristic point of view) but it's setting surrounded by huge cedar trees makes it worth a visit.
  • Beautiful and picturesque shrine on the Hakone lakeside, not even 5-10 minutes away from Moto-Hakone. Do note that it's busy even on really rainy days, so plan accordingly.

Where to stay in Hakone-machi

A getaway close to the capital, Hakone-machi offers a good range of accommodations, with a particular emphasis on luxury and upmarket hotels. Spa resort-style hotels, often with extensive views of the iconic volcano, sit in the main tourist areas, with their spa facilities using naturally warmed waters from the hot springs around the area. The more densely populated areas to the east house a good number of simple guesthouses and hostels. Staying in Tokyo and taking day trips remains an option for many visitors.
