Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu, Hakone-machi

4.3
#1 of 14 in Historic Sites in Hakone-machi
Tucked away on the forested shores of Lake Ashi, Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu stands as one of the nation's major Shinto sites. Founded originally in the 8th century, the complex includes buildings that date back to the 1660s. The grounds feature an array of wooden structures with swooping rooftops and a distinctive black-and-red color scheme, all surrounded by dense cedar woods. Note that many dragons and dragon-like creatures from Japanese mythology adorn the interiors of the shrine's buildings, intended to protect the site from evil spirits. Don't miss the entryway of the main shrine--this red gate, just offshore in the waters of the lake, represents one of the most iconic scenes anywhere in the country. • Not the most beautiful temples that we have seen in our experience in Japan but definitely worth a visit. Of course, especially the torii on the Lake.

  • We walked through the Hakone Shrine and it was a very peaceful experience as we were 'tree bathing' in nature. We spent over an hour here and really loved this place. It was our first time to see a ty...  more »

  • Scenic shrine which was peaceful until a busload of tourists yelling in Mandarin turned up.
  • Wonderful view! Next to the Ashi lake. You have to climb some 100 steps to reach on top but totally worth it.
  • The temple is quite small and partially under construction. It's very close to the port and one of its Torii (the big red gate) is just beside the lake so it's hard to miss. If you take a pirate cruise, it's only 5-10 minute walk from where you get off. I wouldn't say it's a must-see but you should only come if you have time to spare and haven't been to many Japanese temples.
  • Pretty nice place to exercise. ( there is long steps) but you have to wait in a line for everything even taking pictures with Torii ⛩
  • A pretty place to visit but parking can be hard to find close and the town you go through is streaming with people in the streets
