Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu, Hakone-machi
(4.3/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web)
Tucked away on the forested shores of Lake Ashi, Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu stands as one of the nation's major Shinto sites. Founded originally in the 8th century, the complex includes buildings that date back to the 1660s. The grounds feature an array of wooden structures with swooping rooftops and a distinctive black-and-red color scheme, all surrounded by dense cedar woods. Note that many dragons and dragon-like creatures from Japanese mythology adorn the interiors of the shrine's buildings, intended to protect the site from evil spirits. Don't miss the entryway of the main shrine--this red gate, just offshore in the waters of the lake, represents one of the most iconic scenes anywhere in the country. • Went to visit this place with my boyfriend on a weekday so there were not a lot of people. This trip was very pleasant! Cruising to Lake Ashi when the weather was gloomy and cool was a perfect idea! When we reached the Motohakone Port, the sun was about to set making the place more scenic! It was so enjoyable because we were the only ones walking on the pathway to the shrine that was illuminated by the lanterns! The place was so relaxing, peaceful, and magical! We were able to take a lot of pictures and videos of us with no crowds on our background! The Hakone Shrine is very solemn and beautiful! --- Also, there was this unexpected and funny experience that we had on this place. My boyfriend and I were laughing when we were leaving the place because of this guy that we encountered at the foot of the stairs of Hakone Shrine. The guy was jogging up on the stairs and was humming/singing the "Gonna Fly Now" from Rocky movies! I heard him singing the part, "feeling strong now, won't be long now. Getting strong now..." He was basically reenacting Sylvester Stallone's famous training scenes of running up the stairs on Rocky movies! Haha!
  • Beautiful shrine located in the middle of tall trees. Just 10 mins walk from motohakone-ko boat station. Entry is free. While returning from the shrine take the stairs to the very bottom till you reach the lake. Super view from the gate there.
  • From all the "big" shrines I visited so far. This one is the most magnificent to pray at. Beautiful shrine surrounded by ancient cedar trees.
  • Nice shrine with spectacular trees around. Red gat is also nice. Do not expect nothing special.
  • It was raining like hell and no one in our group wanted to go far to the shrine. I made it to the shrine despite harsh weather and i believe it was the best part of the whole trip.
