Hakone Sekisho, Hakone-machi

2.2
#3 of 12 in Historic Sites in Hakone-machi
Historic Site Landmark
A carefully restored Edo-period traffic checkpoint, Hakone Sekisho once monitored a strategic Tokaido road between Tokyo and Kyoto. Originally built in 1619, the current wooden structure was one of the biggest of all 53 Tokugawa-period checkpoints, focusing mainly on weapons trafficking. Strategically located, the spot also offers great views of Lake Ashi. A great attraction for history buffs, the museum features an impressive collection of matchlocks, great bows, spears, mannequins, documents and other accessories, giving an insight into Japanese politics at the time. You can reach the site easily from Odawara station, but you won't find any onsite parking. Plan to see Hakone Sekisho and other attractions that appeal to you using our Hakone-machi vacation planner.

  • I went on a weekday. We have overlapped and field trips for elementary school students, and sees building and Museum. Steep stairs to get to the lookout tower. To climb a bad knee toward your senior who think tough. Erkenbrand does not fall have climbed the stairs of the 4-year-old son was real.

  • Nothing other than the barrier. Was looking for lunch, but children, wanted to eat the bun bun with four more for lunch eat sweets become full, and after all. Buffet and is near shops and noodle and I so think the shop did not. Park, went to the back of the barrier is still encountered as excursion groups of elementary or junior high school students here as well.

  • An interesting reconstruction of one control station. Nice visit on one of the stops of the cruise on the Lake. For those who have young children it is fast enough to not annoy them and before return to resume the boat made a ride them on stuffed animals that move (Pier). About 1,50 euro it is short but fun for kids (or adults having kept a child's soul because stuffed animals are big enough to bear the weight of an adult :-)))

Where to stay in Hakone-machi

A getaway close to the capital, Hakone-machi offers a good range of accommodations, with a particular emphasis on luxury and upmarket hotels. Spa resort-style hotels, often with extensive views of the iconic volcano, sit in the main tourist areas, with their spa facilities using naturally warmed waters from the hot springs around the area. The more densely populated areas to the east house a good number of simple guesthouses and hostels. Staying in Tokyo and taking day trips remains an option for many visitors.
