Trappistine Monasteries, Hakodate

Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
3.2/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web
Visit Japan's first Catholic convent at Trappistine Monasteries. Established in 1898, construction finished on the current building in 1927, culminating in a distinctly European architectural style, with both Gothic and Romanesque features. A number of information panels around the grounds detail the history of the site and the story of Catholicism in the country, though entrance to the building itself is not permitted. Eighty nuns live a self-sufficient life on the site, selling sweets to make a living, so pick up some of the sweet treats available, including Madeleines and butter candies. Use our Hakodate vacation builder to add Trappistine Monasteries and other attractions to your Hakodate vacation plans.
