The Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, Hakodate

Historic Site · Tourist Spot
See a blend of Western and Japanese styles in the architecture of The Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, an early 20th-century assembly hall. The building's design stands in testament to the growth in foreign trade enjoyed during the Meiji period, with the building--constructed in 1910, towards the close of the Meiji period--combining Japanese arabesque details with broadly European art nouveau features. Take a tour of the museum to see many artifacts related to the history of the city, while also admiring the building itself, inside and out. A visit to The Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Hakodate trip planner to plot your vacation.

  • Lovely colourful, old building that commands nice views across the harbour. It is up a slight hill, so if you have mobility issues please take that into account, though it is nothing too taxing. You're free to wander the halls and take in the pleasant interior. If I recall correctly, you are able to rent traditional Japanese clothing and pose for pictures on the balcony. Well worth a visit.
  • Nice and beautiful place. Light-blue wall and yellow line, lovely colour combination. The main hall inside (2nd floor) is astonishing and the view from the balcony is amazing! The volunteer persons will explain the history and would help you to take a picture. I heard the place will be closed from October 2018 for 2 years for renovation. Better to check the website before you visit.
  • The view is very nice even being only outside.
  • Strange feeling standing in front of this big mansion.
  • A historical building that had a perfect view to the harbour. Ticket required for visiting inside the building and you will see the history of it when tour around.
