Symbol of the Hakodate bay area and the early days of the shipping industry, Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse witnessed the city's history thanks to its robust storage business. The red-brick structure was founded in 1887 by Kumashiro Watanabe, who became prominent for contributing to the city's prosperity and industrial success. Stroll past the well-preserved warehouse lining the water, then head to the nearby history plaza for more information about this institution's heritage. Round off your tour with a stop in the beer hall, where you can savor fresh local brews directly shipped from the producer. The number of annual visitors has reached up to 2 million, so expect a crowd during your visit. Where to stay in Hakodate

Look close to the main train station for the majority of accommodations in Hakodate. The large city offers a great deal of variety when it comes to places to stay, with the downtown area featuring everything from chain hotels, to luxury boutiques, to dormitory-style lodgings in youth hostels. A cluster of particularly well-maintained hotels and guesthouses with onsite "onsen" (traditional Japanese spas) sits just to the west of Nezaki Park, with many rooms offering extensive views of the sea, or the canals that make their way inland.

  • Love the shopping in the Red Brick Warehouse. It's very spacious inside and lots of variety of shops, restaurant. Good place to take photos. Shops will close early. make sure you visit early before the shops closes.
  • These cool old warehouses were turned into a shopping centre. It's a good place to look around for a couple of hours. There are a good varieties of shops.
  • Great shopping. Loads of stuff to see and buy. You can also enjoy the scenery around the area. Alot of slopes along the streets though
  • Nowhere comparable to the Fisherman's wharf. It's like the warehouses in Kaohsiung harbor, just a few redbrick structures turned into gift shops. Nothing interesting at all. An okay place to hang out in the rain though.
  • There are some cute shops here. You can definitely spend some time looking at trinkets, clothes, and furniture here. Grab some food and then go outside and hang out. It's not too far from a train station and it's right by the ocean. There was an ice skating rink outside (I went in January). It's a very beautiful place.
