The Holy Resurrection Church of Hakodate, or Hakodate Orthodox Church, is Japan’s oldest Russian-style Orthodox Church, featuring a modernized Byzantine exterior. Founded in 1859 by the Russian consulate and consecrated by the future St. Nicholas of Japan, the church stands as a testimony to Russo-Japanese political and trade ties during the 19th century. Built on Hachiman-zaka slope near Motomachi Park, the church offers a great view of Hakodate city. Locals nicknamed the church a “ding-dong temple” after the sound of its bells. You cannot enter when church services are in progress. See Hakodate Orthodox Church and all Hakodate has to offer by arranging your trip with our Hakodate vacation trip planner.

  • 元町很適合散步拍照,最喜歡這個教堂,因為遊客多所以沒進到裡面去。在外面就花很多時間,因為每個角度都想拍,哈!
  • This is the first Russian Orthodox Church I have been into. It's a beautiful serene place of worship with a lovely garden. Be sure to be respectful, it's lovely.
  • The donation of 200 yen to enter the Church, but could you paintings of the altar and Church Manual. Of Christ the Saviour Orthodox Church is visited for the first time, but inside has small, history like that was very solemn atmosphere. Please visit again.
