The Holy Resurrection Church of Hakodate, or Hakodate Orthodox Church, is Japan’s oldest Russian-style Orthodox Church, featuring a modernized Byzantine exterior. Founded in 1859 by the Russian consulate and consecrated by the future St. Nicholas of Japan, the church stands as a testimony to Russo-Japanese political and trade ties during the 19th century. Built on Hachiman-zaka slope near Motomachi Park, the church offers a great view of Hakodate city. Locals nicknamed the church a “ding-dong temple” after the sound of its bells. You cannot enter when church services are in progress. See Hakodate Orthodox Church and all Hakodate has to offer by arranging your trip with our Hakodate vacation trip planner.

This church is located in an elevated area overlooking the Harbour and is surrounded by well-tended gardens. The outside is not spectacular and the interior is small but very nice and welcoming, with interesting icons on the walls. A visit is worthwhile.

Church history in the port city was opened in the late Edo period. To symbolize the churches of Hakodate, the Annunciation is one of them. Is the Church of a very beautiful form. Former British Consulate-Commodore Perry statue to former Hakodate Ward public hall and walked here. Small church watching first round from the outside. Where on the screen. And of Christ the Saviour in Greek of Christ, and we first learned. And in the Church. From here is only the Church, quietly. With courtesy. Contributions ¥ 200, and surveyed the altar for a while. And Tokyo Nicholai-do I know that rim did not turn off. Just enjoy this area is filled with attractions, so just look too good I think. From the garden of Catholic Hakodate from different religions such as the Church of-Cho, Higashi-honganji Temple Hakodate Branch building, and there was a man of many countries, I feel.
