Where to stay in Hakodate

Look close to the main train station for the majority of accommodations in Hakodate. The large city offers a great deal of variety when it comes to places to stay, with the downtown area featuring everything from chain hotels, to luxury boutiques, to dormitory-style lodgings in youth hostels. A cluster of particularly well-maintained hotels and guesthouses with onsite "onsen" (traditional Japanese spas) sits just to the west of Nezaki Park, with many rooms offering extensive views of the sea, or the canals that make their way inland.

  • Make sure you buy the Snow Crab, which we did not. We bought the King Crab, but the snow crab is a better buy in terms of flavor and cost. The market will push the King Crab because it's heavier and more impressive looking. Go early so you can see all that's being offered without the hustle and bustle. It's neither cheap nor expensive, but the quality is great!
  • A lot of fresh seafood are available here. Take about an hour to cook a king crab so please reserve your time here. Sea urchin and igazashi are available here too.
  • Great place to eat seafood. However pricing is a little expensive. There is a food court there that serves cheaper and same level of food. Watch out for prices of goods there. The traders can allow you to negotiate the prices of their wares and items for sale.
  • VERY EXPENSIVE MARKET For foreign visitors, this market is far expensive, no longer local market but international sight seeing place. In Tokyo, you can take lunch less than 1000 yen very easily, but this place is not. I am from Tokyo and am very disappointed.
  • Fresh sea food at good price. price will be lower compare to Sapporo. Enjoy all you can here. Place will be crowded with tourist
