Goryokaku Tower, Hakodate

4.2
From Goryokaku Tower you can take in sweeping views of Hakodate and the star-shaped Goryokaku Fort below. This soaring 107 m (351 ft) viewing tower is perched at the edge of the historic fort, which was designed in 1855 to protect the territory of the Tokugawa shogunate from Russian invasion. The fort's star shape allowed for better visibility and more gun emplacements. Today, the grounds serve as a park replete with cherry blossom trees. Use the elevators at the entrance hall to reach the two observatory floors, where an exhibition of figurines demonstrates the history of the area. • The Roadrunner Garden, which contains five Guota and two parts of the Roadrunner garden, looks like the entire five-tier park from the tower and is very special in its architectural landscape. The park itself is worth a visit, especially in the historical building of the museum, although the building itself is not large and to be collected, but still worth a stroll to feel the history of Japan.

  • Absolutely awesome view, kind of out of the way if you're on a holiday - took 4 hours by train from Sapporo - but great place nonetheless! Even the curry was delicious!
  • One of Hokkaido's tourist attraction. One can skip the tower and visit the park but to truly appreciate the park you need to see it from the tower first.
  • Oh. This park is awesome. The shape is beautiful. The staffs are very nice. The fort and the area surrounding is very clean. It felt refreshing taking a walk around the fort. Very clean and well maintained.
  • This tower gave a fantastic view of the city and Goryokaku Park. This place and Mt Hakodate can't be missed while visiting Hakodate!
  • You could enjoy great view of the park from the tower as well as 360 degree view of Hakodate.

Where to stay in Hakodate

Look close to the main train station for the majority of accommodations in Hakodate. The large city offers a great deal of variety when it comes to places to stay, with the downtown area featuring everything from chain hotels, to luxury boutiques, to dormitory-style lodgings in youth hostels. A cluster of particularly well-maintained hotels and guesthouses with onsite "onsen" (traditional Japanese spas) sits just to the west of Nezaki Park, with many rooms offering extensive views of the sea, or the canals that make their way inland.
