Goryokaku Park, Hakodate

4.1
#1 of 37 in Historic Sites in Hakodate
Architectural Building Historic Site
Visit the historic site of Goryokaku Park, a former fortress in the shape of a five-pointed star. Built in the 1850s, the fort owes its curious shape to Ayasaburo Takeda, who designed it to optimize defence and gun placement. Roam the fort complex, a public park since 1914, and take a relaxing walk along the moat, lined with lush cherry blossom trees. Climb to the top of the 100 m (328 ft) tall observation tower to enjoy panoramic views of the fort and its surroundings. A visit to Goryokaku Park represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Hakodate vacation route planner to plot your vacation.

  • Great place for a walk and taking scenic photos. Entrance is free but do go early in the morning for best view of the scenery. Prepare to walk and hike a lot. Bring shades if necessary
  • Went during spring. Very nice view. Suggest to Prepare a mat and have a pinic there. Very huge park. Good to go up to the tower to have some nice view
  • The sakura view here was spectacular!! Must not miss this park if you like watching sakura. Night view was quite impressive as well. Must go!
  • Raining when we visited it. Only got to see it from the tower. One of the very few interesting places in Hakodate, but not a must see in Hokkaido.
  • It's a really nice park to walk and stroll about when it's Sakura season! Super nice with all the locals having picnics and having bbq! (They were white when I was there, was expecting more pink tho).

Where to stay in Hakodate

Look close to the main train station for the majority of accommodations in Hakodate. The large city offers a great deal of variety when it comes to places to stay, with the downtown area featuring everything from chain hotels, to luxury boutiques, to dormitory-style lodgings in youth hostels. A cluster of particularly well-maintained hotels and guesthouses with onsite "onsen" (traditional Japanese spas) sits just to the west of Nezaki Park, with many rooms offering extensive views of the sea, or the canals that make their way inland.
