Goryōkaku, Hakodate
(4.2/5 based on 1,100+ reviews on the web)
From Goryōkaku you can take in sweeping views of Hakodate and the star-shaped Goryokaku Fort below. This soaring 107 m (351 ft) viewing tower is perched at the edge of the historic fort, which was designed in 1855 to protect the territory of the Tokugawa shogunate from Russian invasion. The fort's star shape allowed for better visibility and more gun emplacements. Today, the grounds serve as a park replete with cherry blossom trees. Use the elevators at the entrance hall to reach the two observatory floors, where an exhibition of figurines demonstrates the history of the area. Work out when and for how long to visit Goryōkaku and other Hakodate attractions using our handy Hakodate holiday planner.

  • The view of the STAR shaped fortress can be better appreciated up here in the tower. Take a nice slow walk and have a coffee. Don't rush ur day here and be sure to visit the park.
  • I went to the first day of the trip. The view from the tower is the best. In particular, goryokaku was feeling the pressure. Due to limited time is good to explore the goryokaku Tower tour.

  • One of the main tourist attractions of Hakodate which we have bypassed many times before until this year. We were very surprised by the very nice reconstruction of the city offices in the center of the park. The admission fee for a tour of the building is well worth it, going over much of the history and peculiarities of Hakodate as one of the few "open ports" during the early years of the Meiji period. A visit is well worth it, especially during the cherry blossom season due to the many cherry trees planted in the park.
  • Free, accessible and and worth the tram trip Look at any map of Hakodate and Goryokaku park sticks out like a sore thumb. The park shows off the multi faceted seasons with the choice of trees. It's a sakura fest in April/May and is snow covered in winter. Our visit in October presented us with the best arrangement of reds, yellows and green follage in all of Hakodate. We were not disappointed. We got to the destination by tram and foot, only 20 minutes from the JR Hakodate station. Directly opposite and worth the visit is the adjoining tower (requires an entrance fee), and Lucky Pierrot, Hakodate's own burger chain. The store near here is angel themes and its chinese chicken burger is a 5 star must in Japanese weird meets tasty fast food.
  • really beautiful, well maintenance. worth to visit. this is a symbolic of the city. love this place.
  • Great park to take a walk or just chill out. Nice atmosphere with lots of trees and plants. The park is quite large so it might take a while to walk around. When you are in the middle of the park, you don't feel that you are in the star-shaped park.
  • Really neat and peaceful. The observation tower is worth the fee as well.
