Sumiyoshi Shrine, Fukuoka
(4/5 based on 170+ reviews on the web)
Traverse the iconic and supposedly spiritually cleansing bridge at Sumiyoshi Shrine, the city's iconic shrine. One of the oldest in the country, it probably dates back to 211 CE, a flagship of a network of some 2,000 Sumiyoshi shrines nationwide. The main shrine represents the oldest example of Sumiyoshi-zukuri architecture, characterized by a straight, uncomplicated roof, gabled entrance, and simple vermillion-and-white interior. Head to the intricately rendered gardens for a peaceful spot to relax and reflect, watching the koi and terrapins in the pond. • A slight detour through this shrine while walking from Hakata to Tenjin won't go astray. This shrine is modest for Japan, but reasonably large for Fukuoka city. I have to give it a 5 stars, mainly because I was married here. So I keep coming back as a reminder and just because it's so serene and well placed. As a tourist, you know you'll need to walk the Tonkotsu Ramen off anyway.... just be sure you come through here on a sunny day.
  • Very easily accessible by local bus. You need to go to Hakata Bus terminal and it is a 10 min walk. A very peaceful place. A must visit if you happen to be in Fukuoka.
  • One of my favorite shrine in Fukuoka. Stop by and enjoy the contrast of red of the shrine, torii(鳥居) and inari(稲荷) and green of trees!
