Sumiyoshi Shrine, Fukuoka

(220+ reviews on the web)
Religious Site
Traverse the iconic and supposedly spiritually cleansing bridge at Sumiyoshi Shrine, the city's iconic shrine. One of the oldest in the country, it probably dates back to 211 CE, a flagship of a network of some 2,000 Sumiyoshi shrines nationwide. The main shrine represents the oldest example of Sumiyoshi-zukuri architecture, characterized by a straight, uncomplicated roof, gabled entrance, and simple vermillion-and-white interior. Head to the intricately rendered gardens for a peaceful spot to relax and reflect, watching the koi and terrapins in the pond. • This is a wooded shrine with fragrant camphor scent and Gagaku 雅樂 music permeating its serene atmosphere. Highly recommended.
  • Very easily accessible by local bus. You need to go to Hakata Bus terminal and it is a 10 min walk. A very peaceful place. A must visit if you happen to be in Fukuoka.
