City of Yatai
The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River. Tracing its history as a trading port settlement back around 2,000 years, a complex narrative of cultural exchange, feudal fighting, and regional trade has left the city with a number of interesting historical sites and folk traditions, which you can discover at a wealth of museums across the city. With many cruise ships arriving at the port, the city acts as a gateway to the rest of the island, with excursions to Kyushu's active volcanic peaks, "onsen" (traditional Japanese spas), ancient ruins, and storied Shinto temples forming essentials additions to any Fukuoka itinerary. Where to stay in Fukuoka

As the largest city on the island, a hub of commerce, transport, and tourism, and a base for exploration of the wider region, Fukuoka offers plenty of accommodations to choose from. The most established hotels lie in Chuo Ward, the district closest to the port and on the western bank of the Naka River. Standard and luxury options abound in the this area and surrounding districts, offering a range of additional facilities to suit all tastes and budgets. Budget-conscious travelers will be pleased to find hostels and guesthouses throughout the city, but again, primarily in this central area.
