Enoshima Shrine, Fujisawa

4.0
#1 of 21 in Sightseeing in Fujisawa
Religious Site Tourist Spot
A complex of three temples dedicated the goddess of knowledge, Enoshima Shrine dates back to the 5th century and remains one of the area's major Shinto sites. You'll have to climb steep stairs to reach the shrines, so wearing comfortable shoes is advised. The view from the top makes the uphill trek worthwhile--take a moment to soak in the views of the sea and contemplate the long history of this sacred place. • If you want to see a lot of shrines in one location, this certainly is the place. And if you choose to take the stairs instead of paying for the escalator, a lot of rest stops might be needed on a ver...  more »
  • This is a huge climb to get to! It's worth it every time though, it's really beautiful and fun to go to.  more »

  • Enoshima is a must to visit. This is a wonderful island (accessible by foot), just 1h30 from Tokyo center. On a Sunny day, just go there if you have time to spare.
  • Huge, beautiful shrine complex. Has a rather unique feel to it. Interesting statues.
  • Beautiful shrine up the mountainside of Enoshima. A small walk up a few long staircases (or pay for the escalator), but it's a lovely place to see. You can pay respects to Benten, diety of the sea. She is important for many lovers looking for marriage and also for travelers. Free entrance to the outside area.
  • The main shrine building of Enoshima Shrine. I found no English description about the shrine. For me, it's just like another shrine.
  • Excellent place for a day trip that has many restaurants and incredible views of mt Fuji, the ocean, and enoshima. I highly recommend this place for a great cultural and spiritual experience!

Where to stay in Fujisawa

Most tourists only pass through the city of Fujisawa on the way to its popular Enoshima island, where accommodation options include a number of hotels, inns, and traditional Japanese ryokans. Most of the island's lodgings lie beachside or scattered around the waterfront area. If you choose to stay in Fujisawa proper, you'll find several mid-range and budget friendly hotels situated near the railway station.
