Aokigahara Forest, Fujikawaguchiko-machi

Aokigahara Forest , also known as the Suicide Forest or, is a forest on the northwestern flank of Japan's Mount Fuji thriving on 30 square kilometers (12 square miles) of hardened lava laid down by the last major eruption of Mount Fuji in 864 AD. The western edge of Aokigahara, where there are several caves filled with ice, is a popular destination for tourists and school trips. Parts of Aokigahara are very dense, and the porous lava absorbs sound, helping to provide visitors with a sense of solitude. The forest has a historical reputation as a home to "yūrei" or ghosts of the dead in Japanese mythology. In recent years, Aokigahara has become internationally known as one of the world's most popular destinations for suicide, and signs at the head of some trails urges suicidal visitors to think of their families and contact a suicide prevention association.GeographyThe forest floor mostly consists of volcanic rock which can be difficult to penetrate with hand tools such as picks or shovels. Since the forest is very dense, in recent years hikers and tourists trekking through Aokigahara have begun to use plastic tape to mark their paths so as to avoid getting lost. Beyond the designated trails leads to several tourist attractions such as the Ice Cave and Wind Cave. The first kilometer of the forest is littered with tape and other rubbish left by tourists, despite officials' attempts to remove it. After the first kilometer into Aokigahara towards Mount Fuji within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, the forest is in better condition, with few obvious signs of human presence.

  • I'd heard of this place but didn't realise where we had been until later that evening. It's beautiful, not spooky or spiritual or any of that crap just go and see for yourself.  more »
  • Fuji shibazakura Festival when you go to the edge of aokigahara passed by on the car. GW on the first day, but meeting some or many of you had running or walking. Been good nature and sea views from the outside.

  • Fuji air in aokigahara Jukai is less well known. Ask the guides normally in a fully equipped by air cannot enter here without permission. Winter and icy feet, attached to the guide is a great hole. In about ten minutes went past the road going to the hole of the Fuji, I would now like to introduce also crossing there, here at the foot of Mount ōmuro goes out. You can mount ōmuro Fuji 20 places one of the volcano's interesting sight to see. There is this crossing over to the right in the rare Fagus. No undergrowth in the beech forest, as if someone has made weeding or leaves falling on one side. Interesting thing here, clearly have a border at the foot of Mount ōmuro aokigahara lava plateau. Found a interesting terrain do not know apartment omuroyama volcano eruption on the lava plateau or the very next to the lava flowed.

  • This is a fun place! The ice cream was delicious and the staff was very kind, I reccomend it, but not if you go alone. Some creepy vibes were spread but the nature ecosystems and the wonderful animal life it supports makes this forest one of natures beauties!
  • Really beautiful forest. Don't let reviews of people who've only heard rumours deter you. No dead bodies, just a lovely and green primeval forest. I'll admit it can feel a bit spooky and is definitely easy to get lost, as is the case with most forests. People DO come here to commit suicide, but as a visitor you wouldn't know it unless someone told you. That being said, please acknowledge the history and local attitudes towards this forest and treat it with a great deal of respect. I would have liked to had a longer walk but I'm glad I was able to at least see this lovely and dense sea of trees!
  • Beautiful place but spooky and creepy due to it's history. Stunningly green and full of life. Wow. But sadness eeks out.
  • logan paul got mest up because of this place so its goood
  • I want to go there someday and explore the forest with my friends but they are too scared to go... If you are going through depression/anxiety please talk to your parents about it, also to ensure you even more contact a helpline. Just search one up online :)
