Namiyoke Inari Shrine, Chuo

3.4
Namiyoke Inari Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Tsukiji, Chūō, Tokyo. It is an Inari shrine that was built on the water's edge when this part of Tokyo (then Edo) was created from landfill after the Great Fire of Meireki in 1657. The name of the shrine literally means "protection from waves."After the Tsukiji fish market was established in its present location after the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake, the Namiyoke Inari Shrine became an unofficial guardian shrine for the marketplace and its traders. The courtyard of the shrine is dotted with various memorial plaques and carvings donated by trade groups in the marketplace.

  • To pray and surprised to see a huge lion head"on both sides! Also has a quiet sense of place of the lie's "vibrant Tsukiji" until a while ago. There is a bonus and to explore the Tsukiji outer shrine and might, in blessings.

  • Located near the famous Tsukiji fish market and I come here mainly merchants and fishermen to seek fortune in the job. Very small compared to others.

  • This is a shrine near the famous fish market that has over 300 years of history. Lovely and welcoming. Stop by for a bit after you finish in the busy market area!  more »

  • Small. Less crowded. Pray for sometime.
  • Nice quaint temple by tsukiji fish area.
  • If you're at the tsukiji fish market already, then you can stop by the Namiyoke Inari shrine. It's not really worth a visit on its own - at most its a 30 minute stop for some quick factoids, appreciation, and pictures. It's a small shrine without much to do, and there's not a lot of information in English if you want to learn more about it.
  • Nice to visit a small Shinto shrine in Tsukiji. 200yen fortune scrolled paper have English translation.
  • Small shrine hidden in between modern buildings.

Where to stay in Tokyo

Tokyo abounds with excellent places to stay, from luxury affairs to humble budget-friendly lodgings. Its glittering skyscrapers house numerous international four- and five-star hotels, both in the populous cultural hotspots of Shinjuku and in the business centers of Akasaka and Shinbashi. Meanwhile, hostels catering to the shoestring traveler lie scattered throughout the city. For a memorable, distinctly Japanese experience, seek out a ryokan, a traditional bed and breakfast with tatami floor mats and sliding screen doors.
