Matsuya Ginza, Chuo

#30 of 248 in Shopping in Tokyo
At Matsuya Ginza, admire the highest fashion alongside ornate and intricately prepared and displayed foodstuffs. One of two branches of the department store in the country, it was established in 1925, though today the updated building boasts a modern glass and LED facade. In addition to high-end clothing brands, the store's 11 floors also include household goods and a pet shop. As a foreign tourist you'll get tax refunds; check out the third floor to have things shipped home for you. • If the floors are of little interest, two basements are a wonder for the eyes and taste buds! Not necessarily for the wallet... Extraordinary employees.

  • A department store in Ginza. Compared to Mitsukoshi Department store is also feeling a little less upscale and a bit smaller. Without stretching at a department store friendly, you feel.

  • Whenever I go to Matsuya's shoes. Shoes so much that no space is comfortable for me because is a nice shop. Of course good as sales staff in the hospitality and kindness. Other licences coming over voice so loud and easy to see.

  • High end Ginza department store, with the redeeming feature of an excellent food hall, in particular with one of the best cheese shops in Tokyo, as well as a top-class bacon, sausage, cold meat and pate shop.
  • Matsuya Ginza is the first "depaato" department store I visited upon arriving in Japan in 1987. High end, with great service and high prices to match. The white gloved service is what you go to a place like this to experience. Don't expect to barter, or any discounts. Still, it's worth a look!
  • We went to the homewares floor (8th floor?) and looked around but didn't buy anything. Great selection but slightly expensive.
  • It has a small roof, not very busy but hot in summer. I will recommend the fermentation bar and the product design section on the 7th floor. If you have time go to the B1. You will find some good bread here.
  • i love Japan and Japanese people. such humble lot. the shopping mall is superb while not being too heavy on your pocket.

Where to stay in Tokyo

Tokyo abounds with excellent places to stay, from luxury affairs to humble budget-friendly lodgings. Its glittering skyscrapers house numerous international four- and five-star hotels, both in the populous cultural hotspots of Shinjuku and in the business centers of Akasaka and Shinbashi. Meanwhile, hostels catering to the shoestring traveler lie scattered throughout the city. For a memorable, distinctly Japanese experience, seek out a ryokan, a traditional bed and breakfast with tatami floor mats and sliding screen doors.
