Hama Rikyu Gardens, Chuo

4.3
#4 of 422 in Parks in Tokyo
Take a break from the bustle and noise of Tokyo in Hama Rikyu Gardens, a lush public space in Chuo. Surrounding a pond, the gardens housed the residence of Shoguns between the 17th and 19th centuries. Today, the park contains a teahouse in the middle of the pond, where visitors drink green tea and nibble on mochi, a traditional rice cake. Seek out a 300-year-old black pine tree, and, if you visit in early spring, the blooming cherry trees. Put Hama Rikyu Gardens into our Tokyo trip planner to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Tokyo.

  • It is a large garden in the middle of Tokyo. The rare thing is a shioiri pond that pulls seawater. The sea fish is lives. However, it is not very beautiful because it is water of Tokyo Bay. But there is no need to be in a garden that is well groomed.

  • We visited during a public holiday, but it wasn't too crowded and the weather was amazing. A lovely way to spend the afternoon - and who could forget those beautiful canola blossoms!  more »
  • Our guide took us to these wonderful gardens among the skyscrapers of Tokyo. At the time of our visit we found the first spring blooms. Very Nice The pond in whose center is placed a very traditional Teahouse in which we could enjoy a great Tea. Our guide also illustrated the duck hunting system. From The Gardens Pier we then took a ferry over the river to return to Asakusa.

  • Beautiful gardens and very peaceful in the heart of the city. Spent 3 hours wandering around enjoying the sunshine and the buildings in the park. Also took tea in the tea-house in the centre of the lake, this is well worth the time and money.
  • Quiet and serene, never gets too busy so it’s a welcome little space to just relax and spend some peaceful time. No particularly noteworthy buildings or monuments so I’d recommend this more for locals seeking a place to unwind rather than for tourists looking for photo opportunities.
  • Hamarikyu Gardens is a beautiful place to take a leisurely peaceful stroll. To see all its charm & beauty please allow a good 2 hours to venture all the hidden sights with a twenty minute break at the kiosk. Ideally you will need comfortable shoes & a good camera. It is a very tranquil place with beautiful, well-kept & maintained gardens. It is situated south-east of Tokyo center. The entrance fee is 300¥ which is great value considering what you get to enjoy. There are paths & walkways throughout the garden to adventure around at your own leisurely pace with signs in multiple languages, but please be sure that you keep off the gardens & behind the foot-rails as these are no go areas. There are inlets, ponds & rivers to view with some truly stunning sights. And if you're lucky you might catch a glimpse of fish basking in the sunlight! A 300 year-old Pine tree exists and there are numerous famous dwellings that highlights Japan's historical society & history. Also there is a pier with boat trips available to explore the Tokyo Bay. It truly is a memorable place as is much of Japan 🇯🇵
  • Beautiful garden with many Bridges and houses(?) In the old Edo style. It also contains a Shinto shrine as well. If you wish to see up close the living conditions of the ancient Japanese this is one of the best places to do so as it allows you closer access then any other place. Loved my experience here and it really made it's self unique compared to the other gardens I visited. Definitely recommended and loved every second of it.
  • A very well maintained garden. In the heart of the city. The garden has several trees and summer many decades old the garden also houses a large sea water pond with fishes who pop out from nowhere to make this view an amazing experience. the property also has an tea house you can experience the Japanese tea ceremony here entry is charged. the property also has a typical house made out of straw roof. The entire walkaround would take around one and a half to two hours
