Lake Shikotsu, Chitose

Categories: Bodies of Water, Nature & Parks
Inspirock Rating:
4.1/5 based on 440+ reviews on the web
Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, Lake Shikotsu represents one of Japan's deepest bodies of water, offering fine views of a still-active volcano. Formed some 30,000 years ago, the caldera doesn't freeze in the winter, despite the cold northern climate. The eastern shore features hotels and hot spring resorts for tourists, while a nearby canyon shelters rich plant life and over twenty types of moss viewable from an observation deck--an ideal destination for nature lovers. Stroll around the lake's rim or hike up the volcano and enjoy the views over the deserted crater landscape and the glimmering water. Put Lake Shikotsu into our Chitose travel itinerary maker and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.
