Yushima Seido, Bunkyo

3.4
#31 of 519 in Historic Sites in Tokyo
Historic Site Landmark
Explore the Confucian temple of Yushima Seido, which introduced Confucian teachings to the culture and houses what is said to be the largest statue of Confucious in the world. Take a quiet, contemplative stroll around the peaceful but unruly garden, keeping an eye out for the famous pistacia chinensis tree, which was grown from a seed taken from a tree at Confucious' grave in China in 1915. Much quieter than surrounding shrines, you can expect some meditative time to yourself here, away from the bustle and crowds of the city. Where to stay in Tokyo

Tokyo abounds with excellent places to stay, from luxury affairs to humble budget-friendly lodgings. Its glittering skyscrapers house numerous international four- and five-star hotels, both in the populous cultural hotspots of Shinjuku and in the business centers of Akasaka and Shinbashi. Meanwhile, hostels catering to the shoestring traveler lie scattered throughout the city. For a memorable, distinctly Japanese experience, seek out a ryokan, a traditional bed and breakfast with tatami floor mats and sliding screen doors.

  • Great find next to Kanda Myojin! Was not expecting to see a temple dedicated to Confucius in the mist of Shinto and Buddhist shrines/temples. Very quiet area surrounded by walls and majority black color schemes.
  • A mellow place in the middle of the chaos. I enjoyed the calm feeling and the tiny park as a short rest from the city.
  • This was an unexpected find for me, an old Confucian temple amongst the Shinto and Buddhist sites I typically saw. There is a little garden to walk through.
  • Very simplistic yet beautiful temple. Notice a statue of Confucius near the entrance.
  • Old Confucian Temple, which is rare in Japan. And so is the choice of black for all walls. Unique roof decoration, too. It's a very tranquil place, probably because it's surrounded by walls, and features a small park.
