  • Its very original and dynamic statue is right in front of Beppu station. But who was this bald man? Kumahachi Aburaya, merchant wholesaler of speculating on the rice market and hard worker rice made very young a huge fortune in just 4 years. They called him "Général Aburaya". However he went bankrupt and lost everything at the age of 34 years. He went on to make a fortune in the United States. He also traveled for 3 years from the Canada to the Mexico. While he was at the ASA, he converted to the Catholic religion. At the age of 46, Aburaya moved went to Beppu where he opened a luxury hotel receiving rich people around the world. He initiated the advertising on a large scale, like what he had seen in the United States. He did distribute leaflets from a plane flying around Osaka, the great metropolis of Kansai. He also did the poster campaigns for tourism on Mount Fuji, touting: "the best of the Japan: Mount Fuji, the inland sea of Seto and the hot springs of Beppu" Aburaya was the first in Japan to introduce buses of tourism with female guides and the "Hell Tour" circuit (visit of the hells of Beppu: these lakes blue or red blood bubbling as well as sludge in fusion) has achieved exceptional popularity. Followers came to join Aburaya. All these people loving the children formed the "Otogi Club" or club of fairies to give them opportunities to enjoy the fairy stories, songs and other music shows. At Christmas, a Santa Claus appeared a seaplane to surprise children. Nicknamed "Uncle brilliant" by the children, because of his bald head, Aburaya developed Yufuin (at 30 km of Beppu) as a health resort. In 1935, Aburaya died in Beppu at the age of 73. His dream of making his city a worldwide renowned tourist center was realized.
