Where to stay in Beppu

The majority of accommodations in Beppu lie in two main areas. The first, down by the coast and close to the main train station, offers a number of hotels with "onsen" (traditional Japanese spas), as well as some right on the waterfront. On the side streets here, you can find a few hostels and guesthouses, offering comfortable rooms but nothing more. The second main area lies to the north. Further inland, the area centers on the many geothermal features here, with an abundance of hotels surrounded on all fronts by onsen.

  • I bought the all in pass which entitled me to visit 7 pools. This is the 2nd last and list as no 2 of my favourite pool. It is interesting because of the color - red pool. There is foot spa place whic...  more »

  • This is a very special place. The hot springs is in red. It is so amazing. So, that why they call the hot springs as "hell". There are 8 in total. It takes around half day to walk around. It is so interesting. Agreed as National Scenic Beauties of Japan.
  • Third "hell" of our visit and least scenic one. The red, steamy pond with the forest behind is nice. Was pretty crowded and large gift shop is very touristic.
  • The pond is warm and bright red. This is not the color of water. The pond containing iron oxide has a red bottom. Once i gone, never go.
  • Pretty weak attraction. Just the single hell pond with a bit of steamy mist. More a pale orange than red. I was out in less than 10 minutes.
  • One of the popular hells in Beppu. It has souvenir shop there as well.
