Daikanbo, Aso

4.5
#1 of 36 in Nature in Kumamoto Prefecture
Lookout Mountain
Take in the view at Daikanbo, an observation area within the national park. The scenic spot, located on the top of a hill, offers views of five peaks of the mountain range, said to resemble a reclining Buddha. An onsite visitor center introduces the area, the significance of the view, and includes a restaurant serving light refreshments. To reach the observation platform, travel by car and use the onsite parking lot, or drop by as part of a longer walk through the national park. Make Daikanbo a centerpiece of your Aso vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Aso trip generator.

Where to stay in Aso

Aso possesses plenty of accommodations, either within the main city itself, or in the surrounding rural areas. For the most convenient accommodations, simply look along the train line that runs to the north of the volcano, where you'll see a range of hotels and guesthouses, with a mix of luxurious and basic options to choose from. North of the main town, a number of hotels and "ryokan" (traditional guesthouses) get as close as they can to the hot spring. This pattern continues throughout the more rural areas, with clusters of spa hotels close to the hot springs.

  • Good views or surrounding mountains and valley, some walking trails, resaurant and souvernir shop. It's a bit out of the way if you're visiting Aso, but it's a nice stop if you're passing by.  more »
